Andrea Basteris Profile

 Andrea Basteris Profile

Andrea was born in Merida, Mexico in 1986. When she turned 17, she began to experiment with the art of drawing with light and capturing an instant to preserve it forever: the photograph. Thirty years after the Chernobyl disaster and his birth, Andrea Basteris set out on what would be, up to now, the most extraordinary and dangerous photographic adventure he has ever undertaken.

She has chosen to document, camera in hand, the vestiges and mute testimonies of what which is that city today. Despite growing up on the other side of the planet, Andrea has always felt a connection to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Coincidentally the disaster took place in the same year she was born---1986---and it is this serendipity that drew her to the hospitals and maternity wards of Pripyat.

Her work documents and examines the extremities and shifting identities of humanity, often against backdrops of political and socioeconomic conflicts with great courage, she tackles the most challenging images of life, maintaining a solid commitment in finding the purpose and meaning of this existence.

Her artwork explores the delicate balance between life and death, peace and conflict. Her photos invite the viewer to examine the delicate equilibrium between humanity and nature, and the need for greater understanding of our past in order to guide our future decisions.

She currently lives and works in London as a contemporary artist, formally trained as professional photographer at the international Centre of Photography in New York. Find out more about Andrea's work on her website, and social links, as well as profile pages for her work.

Basteris has exhibited previously in galleries in London, New York, Hong Kong, Mexico City and Dublin. Andrea is a contributor for Vogue Italy and a portrait and documentarian photographer.  She is a guest lecturer at the University Anahuac, Mexico.
